U2.com has announced the 2013/14 members-only subscription gift -- a book called North Side Story: U2 in Dublin, 1978-1983. The band commissioned Hot Press magazine to create the 274-page book, which it describes as "full of rare and unpublished photos, reviews, interviews and original pieces by Adam and Bono." Also included is a wall map featuring landmark Dublin places from U2's history.
Hot Press has already published a couple books about U2's early history, but this one sounds different thanks to some new material:
Over the past six months Hot Press have tracked down many of the original players in the U2 story - schoolfriends, musicians, artists, promoters, DJ's and crew.
Along with their unique archive of original content, North Side Story features dozens of new interviews - from Paul McGuinness and Guggi to Jim Sheridan and Steve Lillywhite - bringing the story of the band right up to date.
There's no new, exclusive music in this year's package, but the signup page includes this message: "We anticipate that in this next subscription term we'll also be bringing subscribers some exclusive music from the band."
As far as concert ticket presales go, there's a semi-ominous promise in the news story announcing the gift package: "Along with this special annual gift, subscribers access ... the chance to take part in ticket presales if the band go on tour."
From what I can tell, the subscription price is $$50 for everyone -- no discount for renewals, something that's been offered in the past. UPDATE: A bug that didn't show the $$10 renewal discount has been fixed. New subscribers pay $$50 and renewals are once again $$40.
