Happy New Year! (Wow, is it really January 1, 2012, already? Holy moley....)
Like most everyone else, I tend to do a little more reflection at this time of year, and I've been thinking about what a wonderful group of people we have on the @U2 staff. Smart, talented, funny and caring ... those are a few of the words that come to my mind.
See, when U2 goes on tour, I love it not only for the chance to see a few shows, but also for the chance to see our crew in person again or, in many cases, to meet some of them for the first time. That was especially fun this past year because we added more than a dozen new people in early 2011, almost doubling the size of the staff.
And yet, when we get together at a concert -- like some of us did in Seattle, Pittsburgh and other cities, it's like we're old friends that have known each other for years. I don't know how or why that happens, but it means that getting our crew together for a special dinner or something else is usually every bit as fun for me as the concert that we're all there to see.
Whatever you do in your life -- work or hobby -- I hope you get to do it with people that you enjoy and respect as much as I enjoy and respect the @U2 crew.
For all the reflection, we haven't collectively done any group planning ahead for 2012 yet, but that'll come soon once things settle down after the holidays. I'm pretty sure we'll be doing another edition of the big U2 Fan Survey that we've done several times in the past (but not since 2010). That may happen as early as next month, but it's too soon for me to say that with any certainty.
Congrats are due to longtime U2 producer Steve Lillywhite, who was named a Commander of the British Empire this weekend by Queen Elizabeth. He reacted on Twitter, calling the honor "bloody marvelous!!"
Today i was awarded a CBE .Commander of the Order of the British Empire . Bloody Marvelous !!— Steve Lillywhite CBE (@Sillywhite) December 31, 2011
Not to rain on Steve's parade, because that's a very cool recognition to get, but his CBE designation is apparently one level below the KBE designation that Bono got back in 2007. Lead singers always get the glory, don't they??
@U2 reader Cristina B. recently passed on news that Bono is expected to attend Carnaval in Rio in February. It starts around February 18th and runs for five days. Former president Lula da Silva has apparently invited Bono (they're pretty good friends).
And our good friend Todd R. emailed to let us know that Wolfgang's Vault has added more U2 concert audio to its website: It's U2's performance at the Amnesty International tour's final show at Giants Stadium back on June 15, 1986. I'm listening right now and it sounds pretty good.
And finally ... since this is the space where we often share a video link, I think it would be kinda silly not to share this one on a day like today.
See ya next time!
